The NAMM Show is Ready to Take the O.C. by Storm
[December 2007 - Page 3]
As for something old, the popular NAMM University Sessions will again be a highlight. "The NAMM University Breakfast Sessions you've grown to know and enjoy, including 'Breakfast of Champions,' 'The BIG Issues,' and 'Best in Show,' are returning to the 2008 NAMM Show, bringing new perspectives from industry leaders," said Scott Robertson, director of marketing & communications for NAMM.

The borrowed part is another famous quotation and a show from the minds of Donald Trump and Mark Burnett. "This year, we're featuring a new addition: 'The Retail Apprentice,'" said Robertson. "Presented by Alan Friedman, CPA, Friedman, Kannenberg & Company, P.C., and Danny Rocks, President, The Company Rocks, along with a hand-picked panel of industry veterans, this fun-filled 'game show' session will teach you insider tips and tricks on running a music products retail store. Learn about topics such as sales, advertising, promotions, store operations, rental instruments, lesson programs, inventory, cash flow, and which business practices actually work (and which ones don't) before one of the panelists is told, 'You're fired!' Look for the complete 2008 NAMM Show NAMM University schedule to be posted on www.thenammshow.com."

Definitely not fired from the video game business is Red Octane, makers of "Guitar Hero." NAMM announced it has partnered with Red Octane to run "Wanna Play Guitar?" contests in music product stores with the intent of bringing hundreds of video game players to try out guitar for real. "We worked with a handful of dealers across the country to 'pilot' this program with us and it was very successful," said Robertson. "Of course, NAMM has resources, program materials, and information any company needs to attract new customers from cradle to grave and get them playing music. Stop by our Idea Center booth (5501 in Hall B) to find out more about our national 'Wanna Play?' campaign as it enters its second year of raising the public's awareness about the proven benefits of playing musical instruments. Plus, NAMM University has several exciting sessions planned, including 'How to Create a Profitable Recreational Music Making Piano Program' and 'How to Get More Church Business.'"

Tell us Something We Don't Know
Considering the grandeur of The NAMM Show, it's often fun to look at a topic we rarely approach: the effort behind the show. Work is done at the Anaheim Convention Center weeks before any exhibitor arrives. But putting on NAMM is much more. "[T]he NAMM staff is working on different aspects of the show all year round," said Johnstone. "Today, I'm working on the 2012 show with implications for 2015 and beyond. The planning begins years out and intensifies as each show grows closer. Just about every member of the NAMM staff has some involvement, but there are 12 people dedicated to the project full time; all the time. Beyond that we have outside vendors and suppliers who are very involved in the planning process. Producing The NAMM Show is quite a task, but we have a very capable and experienced team that is dedicated to making it appear easy."
