Kala’s Makala Waterman Series ukuleles feature water-resistant composite technology for playability, portability and durability packaged in a vintage design. The series pays homage to ukulele designer Mario Maccaferri, who introduced the Islander ukulele in 1949. All models come in soprano size and include a backpack/carrying bag. They are made of polycarbonate ABS construction and are complemented with nickel-plated open gear tuners. These materials are easy to keep clean, which is advantageous in settings where instruments are being shared. Each model is strung with Aquila Super Nyglut Strings. Waterman ukuleles are available in three different color configurations: six vintage color tops with matching headstocks and black satin back and sides; three different “Clear” translucent colors; and “Swirls,” which are a nod to vintage ’50s and ’60s ukulele styles with marbleized color back and sides and eggshell tops and headstocks.
